About the Owners
John Murk worked for the Port of Oakland, RT Spragens had a printing company. Calliope was his nineth (and last) boat. Rich and Mary Holden are retired and live in Moraga CA (near Antioch).
About the Boat (History)
John Murk bought and shipped boat to Alameda, CA. Living next to the Oakland YC, John became a live-aboard and eventually sold boat to RT Spragens. Dick changed name from Serenity to Calliope due to memories of summers listening to Calliope music at the East Coast boardwalks. Boat was moved to Benicia, then to Antioch, CA, where it still resides. Mary and Rich bought Calliope and are now addressing several years of deferred maintenance. (2018 Update: It is "mostly" completed). Mary fell in love with the Pilgrim level layout and when Dick, a close boating friend, decided to sell, bought Calliope for "when Rich is too old to sail". Rich thinks Mary is very smart but hasn't stopped sailing, yet, so thinks of it as "Mary's boat" while "Rich's boat" is a trimaran sailboat nearby. Boat will continue cruising the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta and SF Bay areas (which we are still doing. After 31 yrs, in 2016, we were finally able to do the "500 hr, new engine service" on the engine (again). Calliope is berthed next to P40, River Otter, hull 26.
Salon has no fixed couch or chairs, just 2 low cabinets aft, one 6' hanging closet fwd to Stb and a 6' bookshelf over cabinet, fwd to port. Salon has oak parquet flooring, remainder of interior flooring is teak and holly. Boat originally had 2 heads. Forward one removed by PO (now a Porti-Potti). Upper head to stb is PH II electric with fresh water flush and curtained shower. No Fly bridge for that "sleek" look. Stateroom has dry sink with 3 drawers, fwd hanging lockers (p&s) and 4 drawer cabinet just behind anchor locker and transverse Queen Bed. Veranda has teak flooring, clear vinyl or sun screen enclosure (2004), no fixed tables, straight across seating at stern, with locking storage covers (p&S).
